What we do

What time of the year should I prune my trees?

Most trees can be pruned at any time of the year, although some fruit trees have stricter guidelines to get the most out of your harvest. When you get in touch we can advise on best practice for your specific trees. The quality of the pruning is more important, as poor pruning can cause long-term problems.

Do I need to top a tall tree?

Topping is considered a poor pruning practice as it can completely stop growth or result in a miss-shaped tree. Crown reduction and canopy thinning will result in a healthier and better-looking tree. We can visit and assess your trees and advise on the best approach to get the look you want.

Do I need to be home when an arborist comes to work on my trees?

No – as long as you ensure that we have sufficient access to the property and all work to be done is clearly noted on the quote. All our machinery is powered by petrol or diesel motors so we don't require access to power.

When stump grinding is done who is responsible for the underground services?

The customer is responsible for informing our team of all underground services and drainage, but we still take care to locate these and avoid possible damage. If we have concerns we will not proceed without the customer confirming the location of the services, however we can shallow grind if services are apparent. In most cases, the services are well below the depth to which we grind.

Do arborists have their own insurance?

DS Trees carries Public Liability insurance up to $5,000,000, but the customer carries responsibility for all underground services and drainage on the property.

How quickly can I book an arborist?

When we book your job we will discuss fitting your project into a timeline that suits you and our team,  but urgent jobs can often be done the same day or within a few days of notification.

Do arborists leave a mess after removing trees?

At DS Trees we take pride in leaving the site clean and tidy after each job. The details will be discussed at the quotation stage – we can leave mulched material onsite or remove it as required.

Can arborists remove a tree, including the stump, in a confined area?

Yes, we can remove the trees and complete stumps in most circumstances, this is dependent on access for machinery and proximity of structures on the property.

If I have a stump ground can I plant another tree or a garden in the same place?

Yes, stump grinding leaves a fine mulch that can be mixed into the surrounding soil enabling further plantings.

Do arborists help with consent applications?

DS Trees can help you with council applications for resource consents.

How do I know if I am allowed to cut down a tree in Auckland?

DS Trees can advise you on local tree protection guidelines.
